Leadership in Schools

Today I was given the opportunity to work with 5th graders from Waren Elemantry School. UD athletes put on a field day for these boys and girls and seeing their faces light up with just someone cheering them on was a great feeling. I was paired with 15 girls and we took them through a field day at the Fieldhouse ranging in activitives from potatoe sack races to obstacle courses. Knowing that some of these girls don't have positive role models in their lives is heartbreaking to me but being able to give them a few hours of fun, excitement and encouragement was a great feeling.

I think that the University should keep this tradition going with this school and other local schools because it's not too often that young children have the opportunity to experience having fun with college students. Talking to other athletes I know that they enjoyed it as well and we received a lot from it too.

Seeing a whole room with athletes playing with younger kids was awesome as well. So many people were leading the way in showing good sportsmanship, cheering on their teammates and showing gratitude to those who put the field day on.

I will take this experience with me for the rest of my life and I encourage everyone to give back to the community because you will receive a lot in return.
